University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE is a keynote speaker at Aimhigher’s Eastern Region annual conference on Monday, 7 June at Madingley near Cambridge.

Aimhigher aims to promote Higher Education and Further Education study to learners from lower socioeconomic groups. The theme of the event is Widening Access in Education and Building the workforce of the future – the view from here.

Professor Ebdon said: “I am delighted to be speaking at the Aimhigher conference. We are living in challenging times and the event gives us an opportunity to promote Aimhigher and everything it stands for."

The event brings together policy and decision makers from all areas of the education landscape – schools, colleges, universities, work-based learning providers, employers and pupils who come together to assess the current trends in education with an eye on the new political environment and skills development.

Steve Kendall, Chair of Aimhigher Partnership in the East of England and Associate Dean at the University, said: “The proportion of learners from less well-off families going to university has improved dramatically over the past couple of years despite the introduction of fees and the economic downturn but the future for these learners is less certain now.

“This event is set to promote vital dialogue at a time of change and challenge – we need to find ways of continuing to work together to support all our learners in the face of predicted cuts to funding and a reduction in the number of places available.”
