It was third time lucky for Sharon Williams as she finally realised her dream of being a teacher.
After graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1980, she worked for Marks and Spencer in commercial management for the next decade and reached store manager level.
Sharon then took a career break from full-time work to have her two children. She was then fortunate to embark on a second career as a finance officer at Thrapston Primary School, progressing to the role of bursar at The Ferrers School, a specialist secondary school, in 2000.
Then, in her early 40s, she opted for a change of career for a third time. She said: “I couldn’t really see myself doing school administration for the next 20 years or so; I missed working with people. I realised that I had always had a desire to teach and decided it was now or never!”
She completed her Primary PGCE in 2003-04 after spending an enjoyable year studying at the Bedford campus and on work placements.
Sharon said: “I really enjoyed doing the course and I was glad I wasn’t the only mature student! I spent a busy year at Bedford, enjoyed being there and found the course very intensive.
“I chose Bedford because of its reputation for education and its proximity to home.”
Her final placement was at Corby Old Village Primary School. Sharon continued: “A job came up with Year Three/Four here and I was lucky enough to get it.
“I’ve now taught across the range of Key Stage Two and currently teach Year Six. I’m also part of the senior management team which enables me to use my previous managerial experience to good effect.”
She also completed a diploma in mentoring at Bedford in 2007 which enables her to pass on knowledge and experience to aspiring teachers.
“I’m also able to mentor other PGCE students now,” said Sharon. “I really enjoy seeing young people come through to join the profession. My previous experience has given me a different perspective on teaching. I like to push boundaries and watch students and pupils develop.”
Ironically, her son, Tom, is hoping to graduate from Bedford this summer in Sports Science and Personal Training.
