The ‘A list’ of Kenyan athletics are coming to the Bedford campus of the University of Bedfordshire this week.

The five, including an Olympic champ and other renowned international stars, are at Polhill Avenue on Thursday (10 June) afternoon.

The famous five are:

  • Wilfred Bungei - current Olympic 800m champion.
  • Catherine Ndereba - world marathon champion.
  • Paul Tergat - former marathon world record holder.
  • Benjamin Limo - former world 5000m champion.
  • Duncan Kibet - winner of the recent Rotterdam Marathon.

Professor John Brewer, Professor of Sport at the University, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the University of Bedfordshire as all the athletes are very much from the ‘A list’ of world running.”

The scheduled two-hour visit begins at 2.30pm as the Kenyans receive a tour of the state-of-the-art £8million sports science laboratories, followed by a short question and answer session with selected students and staff, and then an informal buffet reception.

The entire week-long visit by the Kenyans has been organised by Bedford Borough Council and is supported by Athletics Kenya and a local charity called ‘Kenyan Community Bedford’.

It is aiming to inspire Bedford youngsters to take part in sport as a number of school visits are planned during their stay, and to create lasting partnerships and a legacy between the town and the African nation.
