Warm weather brought out large crowds
in St George’s Square Luton to find out more about volunteering.
Twenty-five local organisations spent the day talking to visitors and demonstrating some of the volunteering opportunities that exist at a fair to mark Volunteers’ Week. The event was organised by the Volunteer Centre Luton in partnership with Vinvolved, a charity working with young people aged 16 to 25, and UB Volunteering, the University of Bedfordshire’s volunteering team
During the day more than 140 visitors looked around the Luton SOS bus and had the chance to try African drumming with the help of the Friends of Sankuru, an organisation dedicated to supporting deprived communities in the Congo. Vinvolved ran a drawing project on the day for young children and there was a demonstration by Guide Dogs’ dogs.
Community Projects Co-ordinator Zane Dzerina said: “It was a perfect day to celebrate volunteering and show the people of Luton the variety of different organisations involved with volunteering and the opportunities available. The event gave us the chance to network with community groups and raise the profile of the University and our contribution to community volunteering.”
