Creative forces are at work at the University of Bedfordshire this week – and for the next fortnight.
The annual Art and Design Degree Show, called We Create Together this year, will feature work from final year students set to graduate in July.
They are on 10 separate courses - Advertising Design, Animation, Art and Design, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Interior Architecture, and Photography and Video Art.
John Stephens, Head of the Division of Art and Design at the University, said: “It’s a showcase of creative work which is the culmination of their art and design degrees.
“We encourage students to be creative in their individuality and we pride ourselves on not having a particular house style. They are encouraged to take creative risks and the degree show is a testament to that.”
Entirely organised by the students themselves, they prepare and choose their own work, prepare their exhibition space and method of presentation and also produce a professional portfolio and other material to market themselves professionally.
John said: “Students surpass their own expectations. They are often overwhelmed by what they have achieved. We encourage them to be ambitious.”
Opening night (Thursday, 17 June) sees the degree show beginning at 6pm in A block at Park Square, followed by animation screenings in the Judith Blake Theatre at 7pm and then the fashion show at 8.30pm.
This year’s fashion show is taking place in the nearby UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) and John said: “This has a bigger capacity which means we only need to have one show this year, rather than several, to accommodate everyone who wants to watch. It’s always been a popular feature of the degree show.”
Partner colleges and schools, applicants and industry professionals have all been invited to opening night.
The degree show is then running until Saturday, 3 July, when an open day is taking place at the Luton campus. It is free to enter and is open from 10am-5pm on weekdays and 10am-4pm on Saturdays.
