Presenters Gareth Lloyd and Lorna Milton present Professor Ebdon with some special cakes

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE took part in BBC 3 Counties’ 25th birthday celebrations this morning (Thursday) and appealed to alumni to get in touch.

He spoke about the University’s transformation since 1985 from Luton College of Higher Education and the University of Luton to the University of Bedfordshire which was created by the merger of the University of Luton and the Bedford campus of De Montfort University in 2006.

Professor Ebdon said: “I am absolutely delighted to take part in these celebrations because over the past quarter of a century we have come a long way too and seen tremendous changes not just in student numbers but also in our reputation.

“Applications this year are up 54 per cent and we now have 21,000 students here. Some 43 per cent are over 24 when they join us. We are a university which transforms people’s lives.”

Professor Ebdon appealed to alumni from 25 years ago and beyond to get in touch. One alumnus Ian Glenister, who graduated with a diploma in geography in 1985 and is now an associate geologist, said: “The course was a big influence on the career direction I took. I eventually did an earth sciences degree with the OU and never looked back but the diploma in geography at Luton started it all.”
