Professor of Nursing Christopher Johns said he is “surprised and elated” to be awarded a National Teaching Fellowship, which recognises excellence in higher education teaching.

Chris is one of just 50 lecturers and learning support staff to have been awarded a fellowship from nearly 200 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England and Northern Ireland. As well as the award, each new Fellow receives £10,000 to be used towards their professional development or to promote learning.

Chris is best known for championing reflective practice as an educational and research aid in nursing and for the use of complementary therapies in the NHS. He is in great demand as a speaker and teacher nationally and internationally and is a prolific author. He also convenes the annual International Reflective Practice Conference, which, now in its 16th year, is taking place at the University this week.

He said: “I didn’t really expect to receive the award. It is real honour to have my work acknowledged in this way and I would like to thank Mark Atlay and Leslie Lawrence at CETL for their guidance in helping me with my application.”

Chris is still looking at a number of options for how to best spend the £10,000 award, including a project to better assess performance within pre-registration nursing and midwifery programmes or establishing a global networking event promoting an appreciation of ‘dialogue’.

Another idea is to work with people who use reflection in complementary therapy to tell their stories, leading to a public performance.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme raises the profile of learning and teaching in higher education and celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding impact on the student learning experience.

The awards will be presented to Fellows at a ceremony in London on 29 September.
