The University of Bedfordshire will be doing sporting battle with its near neighbours, the University of Hertfordshire, in an inaugural Varsity clash.

The first ever Varsity is taking place at Hertfordshire on the De Havilland campus in Hatfield on Wednesday, 21 April. It will then come to Bedfordshire in 2011 and alternate in future years.

Teams from the Luton and Bedford campuses will compete in a dozen sports - football, rugby, hockey, basketball, netball, swimming, dodgeball, cricket, squash, badminton, tennis and martial arts.

This has been arranged through the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union (UBSU) and its Hertfordshire counterparts.

Ciaran O’Brien, the UBSU student activities manager, said: “The UBSU is proud to be having a Varsity competition against our neighbours.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students from both universities, and is hopefully the start of a strong and positive relationship between our athletic unions. It will be a great way to have fun and finish off our sporting season each year.”

The UBSU president, Julie Sadlier, said: “The number of sports that we are able to play against Hertfordshire is a positive reflection of the wide range of sports UBSU has available to our students, and the number of these we have is growing yearly.

“The last academic year was our most successful, winning 11 league titles and reaching three cup finals, and we are confident of putting up a strong competition this year at Varsity.”

Laura Yeoman, vice president student activities from the University of Hertfordshire Students’ Union, said: “I am very pleased that Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire are forming together for an event that will be a massive success.

“I’m hoping it brings together students from both universities to celebrate sporting excellence, social sport and has a real community feel from the whole students’ union. I hope this event continues annually.”

Bedfordshire will also have its own inter-campus Varsity between Luton and Bedford teams this month on Wednesday, 24 March.
