The University of Bedfordshire has already gone that extra mile for Sport Relief.
Around 30 runners, including staff and students and their family and friends, took part in a 24-hour 300-mile relay challenge to promote the Bedford Mile and attract runners and volunteers for the big day a week on Sunday (21 March).
Some even braved freezing overnight conditions as they went through the night from midday on Wednesday (3 March) to midday on Thursday (4 March) in Bedford Park.
There was at least one runner on the track through the park for the full 24 hours and they just managed to break the mammoth target by three miles to run a total of 303 miles – equivalent of running from Bedford to Scotland!
It was organised by the University’s sport and recreation department and Stephen Pitt, Julia Lines and Daniel Larkin manned the first aid tent for the full 24 hours and completed over 75 miles between them, running through the night and into the small hours of Thursday morning to cover a quarter of the total distance.
All the staff at Alexander Sports Centre along with the various runners were thanked by the trio.
The runners were Andy Hall, Ben Davies, Chris Gasson, Daniel Larkin, Dayna Cook, Julia Lines, Joshua Dyball, Kev Wyld, Lizzie Hall, Mark Cousins, Martin Davey, Matt Janes, Mo Lea, Nick Lorman-Hall, Nick Sculthorpe, Owen Hewett, Pascal Hewett, Paul Davies, Peter Stack, Peter Sheard, Roisin McBride, Sarah Thorne, Scott Baillie, Sophy Bassett, Stephen Pitt, Stuart Wilkie, Tim Hewett, Tom Phillips and Warwick Riley.
Special praise should also go to Sports Therapy lecturer Peter Sheard who ran for three hours non-stop and covered more than 18 miles.
One of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief miles is being hosted in Bedford on Sunday, 21 March, from 10am in Bedford Park. It is being organised by the University, in conjunction with Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit.
Now both runners and volunteers from the University and the local community are being asked to get involved. Runners can compete over one, three or even six miles and the first race is off at 10am.
