Speakers from Belgium and Ireland are coming for a one-day conference on developing programmes of research in physical education and sport pedagogy at the University of Bedfordshire tomorrow (Wednesday).

The University’s Institute of Sport and Physical Activity Research has organised the conference in association with the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and the Bedford Physical Education Old Students’ Association.

More than 50 delegates from around the country and overseas are expected to attend the Bedford campus.

The conference’s aim is to explore the possibilities and potential of developing programmes of research in physical education and sport pedagogy (PESP) within universities. Pedagogy is the practice of teaching or the study of teaching.

Keynote speakers include Dr Leen Haerens from the University of Ghent and Dr Ann MacPhail from the University of Limerick.

Professor David Kirk, Alexander Chair in Physical Education and Sport, said: “As the research field in physical education and sport pedagogy continues to mature and grow, researchers are increasingly taking a programmatic approach to their work.

“Programmes of research typically seek to develop a coherent framework within which individual studies can be located and linked.

“While researchers can and do develop their individual programmes of research, programmes can also facilitate collaborative work, where the programme is created around the shared interests of a group of researchers.”

The physical education and sport pedagogy special interest group (SIG) of BERA promotes educational research in three areas.

They are in physical education and sport in schools, physical education initial teacher training, and continuing professional development for teachers and other professionals working in physical education and school sport settings.
