There were some great performances by the University of Bedfordshire’s sports teams at the national championships.
There was a silver medal for the women footballers in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships in Sheffield. They were beaten 2-1 by Oxford in a close Women’s Football Trophy final at West Park Stadium.
Bedfordshire’s swimmers also produced a committed display at the Olympic-sized Ponds Forge pool, showing their talent and team spirit.
The squad was competing in the Shield event and had some great performances, especially in the crawl races. They finished first in two events, the women’s 50m and 100m freestyle, with Jodie Barber clocking some impressive times including 1.02.53 in the 100m. In the 100m individual medleys, both men and women teams finished in fourth place.
Overall the team ended the competition in sixth place, while Glasgow took the Shield title, with Northumbria and Southampton in joint second.
The Bedfordshire team was Ross Gillon, Ben Lanckham, Paul Read, Dan Cox, Alex Sutherland, Katie Ansell (captain), Natalie Fitch, Joanna Main, Jodie Barber, Abi Schofield, Rebecca Smith and Laura Calver.
