House of Commons visit - new FdA Travel Operations Management course

The University of Bedfordshire went on ‘tour’ to London for a prestigious visit to the House of Commons.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, was joined by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Mary Malcolm, and the Dean of Partnerships, Professor David Barrett.

Dr Sally Everett, the Head of the Division of Tourism, Leisure and Sport Management, Denise Cardwell, a lecturer in tourism, and Helen Corkill, Fellow of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), were also there to mark the University being part of the consortium delivering a new and innovative online FdA Travel Operations Management course.

The House of Commons event celebrated the success of the pilot cohort of students. The graduates, employees of travel company TUI, pioneered the FdTOM and the innovative qualification is now being rolled out across the industry.

The first cohort of students for the University will start this September.

Dr Everett said: “It’s a major initiative for the University and we’re working hard with fdf (Foundation Degree Forward), TUI, other universities and industry groups to make this innovative course a real success. It should put the Division and University on the tourism and travel operations ‘map’.”

Foundation degrees are central to the Government’s new framework for Higher Education and Skills Strategy unveiled by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) last year.
