Dr Elly Philpott, a Senior Research Fellow in the University’s Business School, is making history.

She has been chosen as the first Local Authorities and Research Councils’ Initiative (LARCI) Fellow for the University of Bedfordshire, reflecting its commitment to engage with and support the local economy.

The scheme encourages academic researchers to spend time within local authorities or other local government organisations to undertake policy-relevant research and to develop the research skills of ‘partner’ employees.

The placement will be jointly funded by LARCI and local councils.

Dr Philpott will be working with the local authorities to promote economic vitality to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through involvement in EU projects in areas that are important for the local economy.

She said: “The work will involve the profiling of SMEs for involvement and the transfer of knowledge on how SMEs benefit from involvement in EU projects, and will culminate in a joint seminar for SMEs.

“Previous research with companies from all over Europe has provided valuable information that can be used to support local SMEs.”
