Taryn Bishop - 1

Could the next singing sensation be a student at the University of Bedfordshire?

The debut album by Taryn Bishop, a 22-year-old from Kempston known simply as taryn, is creating a stir.

In the first year of a Dance and Professional Practice degree at the Bedford campus, the singer/songwriter has signed to a record label, released an album and enjoyed a photo shoot to promote the release.

taryn said: “Singing is my passion, even more than dance which I also love. If I could sing every day for the rest of my life, I would!”

Her debut album is called everyone else which was produced by Greg Stephenson and recorded at Perry Road Studios in Buckden, Cambridgeshire.

She was overheard singing by Perry Road Records when she accompanied a friend to the studios last spring. Hearing the versatility and range in taryn’s voice, the label invited her back to the studio for a demo.

A whirlwind summer followed which has resulted in the release of her 12-track debut album – a diverse collection of songs which moves seamlessly across the different music genres from gentle ballads to thumping anthems.

Gilly Lee from the A&R team at Perry Road Records said: “taryn is a very versatile performer. Not only does she possess a great voice but is hard working, determined and gutsy. We believe taryn has potential which is why we chose to work with her.

“The album is being targeted at the mainstream market through traditional methods and also through MySpace and Facebook. With a diverse range of styles, we believe everyone else has something for everyone.”

Born and bred in Bedford, although she spent two years living in Norway as a child due to her dad’s work, taryn went to Wootton Upper School and Performing Arts College. While there, the college toured Germany and she also appeared in a production of Les Miserables.

taryn also spent nearly a decade studying dance at The Crescent Academy in Bedford – even appearing in a show involving Aussie legend Rolf Harris!

After completing two years of a business degree, Marketing with Tourism, at Northampton University, she decided to return to her roots. taryn said: “I decided the course wasn’t for me and I missed my dancing too much.”

And she added: “I used to sing in the shows when I was at Wootton and The Crescent and I just enjoy singing so much. I even used to sing at my grandparents for hours after school!

“I used to listen to the stuff my mum and dad had on at home like Madonna, Meat Loaf, Wilson Phillips and Enya, but I’m not particularly influenced by anyone and like to think I’m unique.

“This all wouldn’t be possible without Gilly, Greg and Perry Road Records. It’s always been my dream and I wouldn’t be doing this now without their help.”
