The multi-million pound sports science laboratory facilities at the University of Bedfordshire will be heavily featured on BBC Radio Four’s flagship weekly health series next week.
Presenter Dr Mark Porter MBE was joined by his Case Notes producer Erika Wright to record part of the show at the state-of-the-art facilities at the Bedford campus on Wednesday lunchtime.
Two members of staff, Professor of Sport John Brewer and Senior Lecturer (Exercise Physiology) Nick Sculthorpe, were interviewed on the subject of hydration.
Dr Porter said: “The University has got an excellent reputation and we wanted to go somewhere to talk about the science behind sport and explode some of the myths. There is some misinformation about what people should or should not be doing and we aim to explain the truth.”
Dr Porter has known Professor Brewer since the early 90s and the pair ran the London Marathon together in 2003.
“We asked John why sweating matters and of the importance of hydration, while Nick explained why water is so important to us, where it is in our bodies and what it does there,” explained Dr Porter.
As well as hosting Case Notes, Dr Porter is the medical correspondent for The Times newspaper.
Previously, he was the doctor on Good Morning with Anne and Nick for the show’s whole run after joining the BBC in 1992. He was also the health editor for the Radio Times for 10 years until 2003 and presented the BBC1 programme Watchdog Healthcheck.
The half-hour programme is being aired at 9pm on Tuesday night (11 May) and repeated the following day (Wednesday, 12 May) at 4.30pm.
Professor Brewer said: “I’m delighted Mark chose the University to record the main content of such a prestigious programme.”
