It’s official – the University of Bedfordshire has organised the best teaching fair in the country this academic year.
The teaching fair at the Bedford campus in January, which attracted more than 500 students, was the winner of the 2010 award for Best Fair at a recent meeting of local authority recruitment managers in London.
The annual vote - regarded as the Oscars of the teacher recruitment profession - was for the best (and worst) teacher recruitment fairs of 2009-10.
Now in its third year, it was the first time Cambridge had failed to win the award for Best Fair.
Careers advisor Christine Smith and careers events and communications co-ordinator June Wilson arranged the teaching fair at Bedford.
Christine said: “We’re thrilled to receive this award and look forward to next year’s event which is already being planned.
“June and myself have worked closely with local authority recruitment managers, the academic staff and students to continually improve this event year on year.
“I’m aware of a number of former students who have found their first teaching post through our annual teaching fair.”
Paul Davies, Head of the Department of Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education, said: “This award is a great tribute to Christine and her careers team, as well as to our staff and students.”
The Teacher Recruitment Manager for Luton Borough Council, John Manning, was part of the voting process.
He said: “This award is based on our collective experiences of over 40 fairs each year. One of the key elements why Bedford was chosen was the quality of the pre-event organisation with things like administration, set-up and room layout, and also on the day with the facilities provided which included parking, the student helpers, signposting around the campus, room layout and refreshments for exhibitors.
“The event also received significant support from the Faculty of Education and Sport which showed cohesion between the department and the careers team.
“And of course the large number of students attending, and their quality and preparation, was another key point.”
