Two glittering awards ceremonies have rewarded students’ excellence, hard work and commitment to university sport.
The University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union recently held awards nights in both Bedford and Luton.
It was the first year that the University has awarded sport colours, with nominations coming from fellow students, staff and sport coaches.
First up was the Bedford campus AU (Athletic Union) Awards ceremony at the Bedford Corn Exchange.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Mary Malcolm, was the guest of honour. She presented the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Excellence to Sport to Martin Paterson, a student so committed he has ran more than one sports team this academic year.

Micheal Doyle won both Full Colours and International Colours for race walking after competing all over the world and being ranked number one in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition for the past three years.
Coach of the Year went to Greg Ellis who led the basketball women’s team to unbeaten league and cup success this year.
Other awards were then presented at both a club and individual level, including swimming (Team of the Year) and football (Club of the Year).
It was the turn of the Luton campus a week later when the Menzies Strathmore Hotel hosted the evening.
The University’s Registrar, Dr Jim Franklin, was the guest of honour and presented the Club of the Year award to rugby.
Lydia Howton was awarded with International Colours for representing Great Britain at ice hockey, and Christine Foster was awarded Coach of the Year for leading the netball team to undefeated league success.
Again, other awards were presented at both a club and individual level, including the basketball men’s team who were Team of the Year.
