Medical expert Sir John Tooke gave a fascinating talk at a special event at the University of Bedfordshire’s Putteridge Bury campus.

Professor Tooke spoke about The role of the doctor in the 21st century at the fourth annual joint seminar between the University and the English-Speaking Union (ESU).

Professor Tooke is Vice Provost, Head of the Medical School and Head of the School of Life and Medical Sciences at University College London. He was knighted in 2007 for Services to Medicine and subsequently led a government inquiry into the reform of medical training. He was appointed to his present posts at UCL earlier this year.

The event was organised by Dr Tony Wood, Chairman of the Ouse Valley Branch of the ESU, and the founding Vice Chancellor of the University.

Dr Wood said: “The visit of Professor Tooke continued the tradition of attracting some of our most eminent national speakers to these prestigious joint seminars. He spoke on the very day on which the new coalition government was formed, and his views on the future of the NHS were therefore particularly relevant and of great interest to the large audience, which included health professionals and nursing students from the University.”

The ESU is an international education charity founded in 1918 to promote “international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language.”
