The University of Bedfordshire’s new £34million campus centre passed a major milestone at a special Topping Out ceremony today (Mon).

The event marked the completion of the roof and was attended by University staff, governors, donors and representatives from contractors Kier Marriott, architects RMJM and global construction consultants Davis Langdon.

The campus centre is due to open in the autumn and is part of the University’s massive £134m investment in its campuses which will also see brand new halls of residence being built in the town ready for 2011/12

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE was presented with a glass plaque to mark the occasion on the rooftop from Kier Marriott Managing Director John Henke.

He then inflated the *ETFE roof to the main atrium by hitting a special button. Afterwards, University Chaplain the Rev Andrew Goodman conducted a short blessing.

Professor Ebdon said: “I am delighted to receive this glass gift on behalf of the University. This is an exciting project and I am grateful to everyone involved, particularly Kier Marriott who have been great partners to the University.

“We are a University that puts students at the heart of University life and I am delighted to say this new campus centre will do just that because all the things that matter to students, including the Students’ Union will be based here under one roof.”

John Henke said: “This ceremony is an opportunity to say thank you to the large numbers of people involved in this project, including design consultants, architects and site workers. But our biggest thanks must go to the University for having the vision and the faith to embark on this project.”

*ETFE stands for Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene and describes the material used.
