Two internationally-recognised artists are producing artwork for the new £34m Campus Centre at the heart of the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus.

The artwork has been specially commissioned by the University to be an original and permanent fixture of the new building which has just opened, and the artists chosen are Cedric Christie and Susan Stockwell.

Susan will be creating a large internal piece which will be the focal point of the atrium, and Cedric is constructing a sculpture for the grassy area in front of the building.

Commissions East is one of the UK’s leading public art agencies which works in partnership with the public and private sectors such as the University to develop and deliver visual arts projects.

Ash Waqar, Commissions East Project Manager, said: “From our original shortlist of seven, we felt that the two chosen artists really pick up on the history and diversity of Luton. We’re confident that both Cedric and Susan will deliver outstanding works of art.”

Cedric’s sculpture draws on Luton’s hat-making industry and the diversity of the University. He said: “I’m really excited about creating something I hope will inspire others and spark off more ideas. I’ve enjoyed working alongside the University, and learning about the history of Luton.”

Before becoming an artist, Cedric was a welder. He has also exhibited widely in shows across the UK, as well as in Europe and America.

Susan’s piece will transform recycled computer components into an extraordinary map of the world. She said: “I’m thrilled to be adding something to the University that will become part of the fabric of the building and the map artwork is especially appropriate considering the diverse student and staff population. I hope that my use of recycled materials makes people think about the objects we use everyday.”

All the recycled components that Susan will be using come from Secure IT Recycling.

Susan has exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The National Museum of China in Beijing and The Katonah Museum of Art in America.

John Stephens, Head of Division, Art and Design added: “This is a complex process, but an important one. We feel we have two fantastic artists who will help provide an important legacy for the University. Our thanks go to everyone who has been involved, whether Commissions East, architects, site managers or the artists themselves.”

The University is investing millions into new state-of-the-art facilities, including the new Campus Centre in Luton, and £40m en-suite student halls.
