A respected research professor at the University of Bedfordshire met with the Executive Director of the Academy of Social Sciences this week.
Professor David Kirk became an Academician of the Academy earlier this year. A special reception to mark the event was held at the Bedford campus in late June before he picked up the award in person in London at the Academy’s AGM at the UK headquarters of Amnesty International.
Executive Director Stephen Anderson was unable to attend the reception at Bedford but enjoyed a meeting with Professor Kirk and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, on Monday (6 September) lunchtime.
Mr Anderson said: “We’re delighted that David was conferred the honour of Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. It was for his contribution to scholarship and the cause of social science more broadly.
“Our meeting was to talk about furthering the work of the Academy, both within the discipline of physical education and in the University as a whole.”
The Academy promotes excellence and encourages the advancement of social sciences in the UK to the Government, as well as public and private sector organisations. Academician status is conferred on scholars and practitioners for their outstanding achievement in their field and commitment to the aims of the Academy.
Professor Kirk became the Alexander Chair of Physical Education and Sport, based in the Faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism at the Bedford campus, in June 2009.
He was nominated to the Academy by the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and he is one of only five educational researchers to be selected in this biannual awards process.
Other members of the Academy at the University are Professor Ivor Gaber, a Research Professor in Media and Politics, and Professor Michael Preston-Shoot, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. Professor James Crabbe, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science (CATS), is an affiliate member of the Academy.
