Students at the University of Bedfordshire are being urged to give sport a go thanks to a cash boost of more than 200k.

The University has received £208,120 in National Lottery funding from Sport England for its Get into Sport project.

Along with 40 other projects, it is being backed by Sport England’s £10million Active Universities fund to get more university students playing sport, as part of the mass participation legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Get into Sport will build on the success of the Get back into initiative run by the local county sport partnership.

Focusing on traditional sports such as football and netball, as well as the less traditional ones like dodgeball and rounders, the project provides continuity to students and it also offers them the chance to be trained in leading and coaching sports sessions.

Research by the University showed that less than seven per cent of its students were regularly active and that funding of sport was mainly directed at competitive sport. This project will make sport much more accessible to the whole student population.

Professor John Brewer, the University’s Director of Sport, said: “I am delighted that Sport England has made this award to the University, which will provide our students with an opportunity to access a range of sports and coaching expertise over the next three years.

“We have a long heritage of sporting prowess at the University and this investment will enable us to provide an exciting range of opportunities for recreational sport to all students studying with us.”

The full announcement was welcomed by the Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP, who said: “This funding for 41 different sport projects across the country is exactly what our Olympic legacy promise is about – offering more opportunities for people to get involved. This will boost university sport and encourage students to continue playing once their studies are over.”

Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, said: “This award will enable the University to offer a range of exciting sporting opportunities for all of our students, and I am very pleased that we have been successful in securing this funding from Sport England.

“Current students, or those considering studying with us in the future, now know that their sporting experience will be enhanced as a result of this award, and that they will have the opportunity to access a range of sports and coaching support during their time at the University.”
