Dozens of Year 13 students interested in sociology learned more about the subject recently at the University of Bedfordshire.
The fourth annual A-level Sociology Student Conference took place at the University’s Bedford campus on Saturday, 2 April.
Organised by Lecturer in Sociology Alison Tresidder-Spivey, the conference also saw Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Criminology Dr Jack Fawbert speaking on the day.
Tresidder-Spivey lectured on Forensic Mental Health – Dealing with the mentally disordered offender and Dr Fawbert’s lecture was on Stratification, social exclusion and football fandom. As well as these two lectures, there were also two sessions of interactive workshops during the event.
Dr Fawbert said: “We have a responsibility at the University of providing a link with schools and A-level sociology students often don’t know what to expect when they go to university.
“About a third of students have never even had the opportunity to study sociology at school. A day like this raises the profile of our university and shows what we offer.
“Teachers recommend us as a good place for their students to come to and we also go out to some of the local schools to give guest lectures.”
There are plans to stage the event for the next academic year before Freshers’ Week this September.
