The sun shone as sporting students from the University of Bedfordshire gained revenge for the previous year’s Varsity defeat against the University of Hertfordshire.
The result went down to the wire in the second ever Varsity last Wednesday (6 April) before hosts Bedfordshire secured a 18-15 final scoreline.

After Bedfordshire lost the men’s football 3-1 to their Herts counterparts, it was left to the women basketballers to record an emphatic 56-32 success to ensure ultimate victory.
Hundreds of students were either playing or watching the action which took place at the Alexander Sports Centre and the Bedford campus with food, refreshments and music on site all day at Polhill Avenue.

Ciaran O’Brien, UBSU Student Activities Manager, said: “Varsity was an extremely challenging event for us to plan and manage but in our very first year on home soil, our teams triumphed and ensured our first win.
“We are very proud at the conduct of our teams and overjoyed at how well some of them performed, and thank our competitors for helping to create a great atmosphere on the day. Congratulations to all involved!”

Students’ Union President Lyndsay Murphy was on hand to present the Varsity shield to the captains of the women’s football and basketball teams at the end.
Hertfordshire’s Laura Johnson, their Sports Development Manager, added: “The atmosphere was fantastic and all students were extremely well behaved. Congratulations on Bedfordshire’s victory; we are looking forward to filling the space in our trophy cabinet next year!”
