One student at the University of Bedfordshire will be getting closer than most to this year’s Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.
Sport Science and Coaching third year student Lauren Impey has come through a tough selection process and beaten off the challenge of 460 applicants to head the volunteering team at Europe’s showpiece soccer event in London on Saturday, 28 May.
The 21 year old from Northampton will act as the liaison between UEFA and the hundreds of volunteers in the fortnight before the event and in the immediate aftermath.
Lauren will be the first point of contact for the army of volunteers and her duties will include sorting out transport for VIPs, the hospitality arrangements as well as media liaison.
She will be based at the impressive new Wembley from 16-29 May, with access to the tunnel and pitchside for the final itself which could include the likes of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid and English hopefuls Manchester United.
Lauren, the Student Sport Officer at the Bedford campus, had initially responded to an advert on the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) website by filling out an application form which then led to an invite to attend interviews at the redeveloped home of English football, Wembley.
She said: “The interview panel said I was the one who really stood out from the rest and that was a great thing for me to hear.
“I can’t wait to start and I arrive a week before the all the other volunteers. I will be doing a bit of everything and it’s obviously good for me to make a good impression, both for now and for the future.”
The centre-back, who plays for the Leicester City women’s team, has also represented English Universities and Great Britain Universities in international competition.
She was attending trials this week at Warwick University for the next World University Games, known as the Student Olympics, in China from 13-24 August. She was previously involved in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2009 as GB won a medal for the first time ever in women’s football.
If selected, this could mean an even busier summer schedule for Lauren following her Champions League exploits, University exams and then graduation ceremony in Bedford in July. After the possibility of going to China, she will be jetting off to America at the end of August on an all-expenses paid soccer scholarship as she starts her two-year Masters course in Sport Management at Lynn University in Florida.
