A former star student of the University of Bedfordshire is shortlisted to be one of the new bright young things.

Steven Conway is hoping his work will be featured on a New Generation Thinkers programme on BBC Radio.

BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) have joined forces to find the next generation of public intellectuals.

Together they have launched New Generation Thinkers – a pilot talent scheme for emerging academics with a passion for communicating the excitement of modern scholarship to a wider audience and who have an interest in broader cultural debate.

Conway has been selected as one of 57 finalists, out of more than 1,100 applicants, to develop his programme ideas in close collaboration with BBC editors and producers.

Ten are being selected and will be given a 45-minute programme slot to broadcast their thesis and engage with the public, while also appearing as guests on many established BBC Radio 3 programmes.

Conway is a graduate of the MA Media Culture and Technology programme, achieving a Distinction, in 2006.

He was awarded a PhD by the University in 2010 for his dissertation on sport simulation computer games and subsequently worked for RIMAD (Research Institute in Media Art and Design) as a postdoctoral research fellow, and as a visiting lecturer on the MA Media courses.

Conway is about to take up a post as a senior lecturer at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.
