Two of its students are supporting the University of Bedfordshire’s partnership with the charity of Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes.
The two current students chosen for an internship are Sport and PE second year Kirsty Walker, who is based at the Bedford campus, and Olga Resetnaka, a final year Media Practices and Public Relations student from the Luton campus.
Their internship over the summer months will see them working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.
It will have particular emphasis on the build-up and the aftermath of the all-day Unlocking Potential event at the Bedford campus on Wednesday, 29 June. Kirsty will focus on sports development aspects of the project and Olga will be dealing with both internal and external communications for the big day.
Kirsty said: “I’m organising the sports side of things and it’s good for me to make connections with lots of schools and clubs. It will help build my experience and skills.
“I never had the chance of coming to something like this and it’s a great opportunity for those involved at this event.”
Kirsty, who is from Norfolk, has played a variety of sports and currently plays rugby for the women’s team at Bedford. She is an activity leader at a summer camp in Oxfordshire in late July and August and has also coached alternative sports like dodgeball in Bedford in the last 18 months.
Olga is an EU student from Latvia who is staying in Luton and she will be based both at the University and in the charity’s headquarters in London.
She said: “I didn’t know Dame Kelly before I met her in Reading but it was nice when I did; Kirsty was so excited to meet her! I’m excited about this opportunity and I really can’t wait to get started now.”
The University’s Director of Sport, Professor John Brewer, said: “Kirsty and Olga were up against strong competition from a number of other students to succeed in gaining these internships.
“Both have already met Dame Kelly Holmes and have a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience with one of the country’s high-profile charities.
“It’s great that the University of Bedfordshire’s partnership with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust has provided this type of opportunity for two of our students and I’m sure they will both enjoy and benefit from such a fantastic opportunity.”
