A student PE teacher at the University of Bedfordshire is setting her sights on excelling for Great Britain this month.
Talented rifle shooter Karen Kennedy is off to Germany to compete for the Great Britain junior squad later in May.
The 18 year old from Crawley in Sussex is a first year student on the PE (QTS) course based at the Bedford campus.
She competes in ISSF (International Smallbore Shooting Federation) rifle shooting and is off to Oldenburg from 26-31 May for an international tournament known as The Oldenburg International Match 2011.
This will see Karen and other members of the GB junior squad, plus some members of the senior squad, pit their skills against the host nation and various other European countries as well as the likes of South Africa and the USA.
The event initially began in the 1990s, just between Great Britain and Germany, to ensure shooters from both countries gained more international experience and practice.
Karen is one of the advanced sports scholars at the University and has received £1,075 this year to buy kit and to cover her training costs.
She trains four times a week at the Bedford Rifle Club and took up shooting due to her dad’s keen interest in the sport, while brother Doug is also a pistol shooter.
Karen, who is also interested in sailing, tennis and running, said: “I’ve hopefully got another three years as a Great Britain junior as you can compete at this level until you reach 21.”
