A long-term member of the University of Bedfordshire’s cleaning staff is serving up something tasty.
Prisca Pobee, based at the University’s Luton campus, has developed a marinade, inspired from her early life in St. Lucia. The marinade which comes in either mild or hot flavours is made from natural ingredients including turmeric, ginger and garlic.
Prisca said: “I started experimenting with flavour combinations several years ago, to flavour chicken dishes I remembered as a child in St. Lucia. I just wanted to create something different and unique compared to other sauces available.”
Spurred on by family and friends, Prisca may have now come up with the winning recipe as her sauce has gone into production. With some help from the University’s Business School with product packaging, design and marketing expertise, Prisca launched Priscas Sauce.
Prisca added: “Guy Parrott in the Business School has been very supportive. We came up with the packaging’s design, look and feel and Guy helped me set up a website”.
Early signs show that Prisca’s efforts are paying off. She supplies a Caribbean food store in The Mall in Luton and a cash and carry outlet in London. As part of the Students’ Union Diversity Week events earlier this year, Prisca sold more than 50 bottles of her sauces and feedback from students and staff has been positive. Spurred on by these recent successes, Prisca is now exploring new outlets to market her sauces more widely.
Prisca has worked at the University some 19 years and lived in Luton for 29 years. The mother-of-four also has strong family connections to the University. One daughter, Andrea, is an Accommodation Officer at the University. Another daughter, Jacqueline, studied Media Studies and graduated from the University in 2006.
