Graduates are securing jobs despite the recession – that’s the view of the University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL.
Professor Ebdon was speaking as Chair of the think-tank million+ following publication of a survey, carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), which showed that 80.8 per cent of students who graduated in 2007 were in work.
He said: “This survey confirms that even in times of recession, graduates achieve very high levels of employment.”
The survey also showed that 85.4 per cent of those in employment said their qualification had been helpful, important or necessary to get their current job, and 76.5 per cent said their university experience had prepared them well for their career.
“Graduates themselves continue to place very high value on the experience and skills provided by a university degree. The vast majority of graduates state that their qualification has been 'helpful, important or necessary' to get their current job,” said Professor Ebdon.
“Studying at university for the degree you need to do the job that you want remains one of the best decisions that people can make and one of the best routes to getting a job even in very difficult economic times.
“Here at the University of Bedfordshire, 90 per cent of our graduates are either in work and /or further study six months after graduating.”
