Bedfordshire in fine voice at carol service

Carols by Candlelight at Luton

Tue 13th December, 2011

The spirit of Christmas came to the University of Bedfordshire at a candlelit carol service.

Carols by Candlelight was held in St Mary’s Parish Church and was well attended by staff, students and members of the public – 455 people in all.

The Luton Youth Cantores Girls Choir was in fine voice, singing firm Christmas favourites. They were joined by the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union (UBSU) Promised Destiny Gospel Choir, UBSU Stage Addicts and the UBSU Chinese Student Christian Fellowship.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL was one of several members of staff who gave readings throughout the service

More than £500 was collected for the Noah Soup Kitchen on Park Street which feeds homeless people during the cold winter months. Generous donations of cans of soup were also made by the congregation, who were treated to mulled wine, juice and mince pies after the service.

Chaplain for the Luton campus Rev Andrew Goodman said: “Carols by Candlelight seems to be growing year on year – there’s a lovely atmosphere and I think people appreciate it. For me the most touching moment was interviewing the mother of 14-day-old baby Lena-Marie - who was our ‘visual aid’ for the Nativity scene.”
