A Dean at the University of Bedfordshire has had a paper published in an international journal.

Professor James Crabbe, the Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science, had his paper, Coral resilience on the reefs in Jamaica, published in the journal Underwater Technology.

James said: “I am delighted that this work on the survival of coral reefs has been published in the peer-reviewed international journal of the Society for Underwater Technology. The objectives of the journal are to inform readers with current views and new developments in the broad areas of underwater technology, ocean science and offshore engineering.”

The paper talks about how knowledge of factors that are important in coral reef growth help us to understand how reef ecosystems react following major human influence and environmental disturbances.

Physical measurements by scuba divers, together with an underwater remotely operated vehicle, were used to study environmental and climate effects on corals on fringing reefs in Jamaica, following a bleaching event in 2005.

The date showed that while recruitment of small corals was returning after the major bleaching event, larger corals were not necessarily resilient, meaning there is a need for careful management if the reefs are to survive such extreme events.
