Help roving Robyn raise thousands

Student Robyn Sach is aiming to raise £8,000 for four charities in just one week – and needs your help!

The 21-year-old University of Bedfordshire journalism student plans to double last year’s sum raised during Raise and Give or ‘Rag’ Week in support of Cruse Family Bereavement, Luton and Dunstable Hospital: Oncology Room Renovation Project, Make A Wish Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Trust.

She said: “I am determined to beat last year’s total and so I have enlisted the help of University staff, students, friends and local companies, including Pizza Express, Dr Fish Spa, The Mall and The Brewery Tap. All have donated fantastic prizes which we can auction or use to raise more money during Rag Week in January.”

The week-long fundraising event kicks off on 16 January 2012 with a ‘bachelor auction’, where up to 30 male students will be auctioned off to the highest bidders, whose prize will be a night out with one of the ‘volunteers’, who include Students’ Union President John Perkins.

Robyn has an impressive track-record for volunteering in her home town of Brentwood in Essex. She was the youngest person in the country to win a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by actor Helen Mirren, for her youth voluntary work. After school on Mondays she helped out at a Sexual Health Clinic for young people; on Tuesdays she worked with children with special educational needs; on Wednesdays she cooked at a drop-in centre; on Thursdays she ran a drama class for children; and on Fridays she organised live band events – all while completing her Duke of Edinburgh Award. She also helps run regular music festivals, is an active member of her local youth assembly and set up Brentwood Youth Council.

Robyn was well-qualified to win the student elections to become Rag Officer at University. She said: “I have organised a lot of charity fundraising events and am planning a host of events throughout the year, including our own Three Peaks Challenge. It’s about doing something quirky, raising a smile and raising some money at the same time.”

Robyn works in her aunt’s bar in Brentwood at the weekend although her ambition is to work for the Washington Post. (“I have wanted to be a journalist since I won a schools competition and had my first poem published when I was 10.”)

So, how does she fit everything in? She said: “University is all about experiencing things and I like to get involved in everything. But I did have a day off last week,” she said, and added: “It was my first since July.”

If you can help raise money for Robyn’s four charities by providing a prize, sponsorship, cash or other support, please contact her at beds_rag@hotmail.co.uk or via the University’s Press Office on 01582 743046.
