The University of Bedfordshire is set to launch a brand new postgraduate course in International Journalism next year.
The Master’s of Arts (MA) in International Journalism, which starts in February, is aimed at useful to anyone seeking to work as regional or national reporters, political, economic and foreign correspondents.
Course leader, Dr Paul Rowinski, said: “After consulting with industry experts, the feeling was that there was a need to have a degree that has an internationalised approach to journalism. This will enhance the journalism careers of our students, whether they are home, EU or international students.”
Students will learn about the role of a reporter and study journalism practises around the world. They will also gain knowledge in multiplatform journalism and research methods.
“The degree will fully engage and analyse globalisation in its many guises. There is the globalisation that has brought us the internet and the notion of a global audience at the click of a journalist’s mouse. There are also the increasingly contentious roles of global institutional players: the World Bank; the International Monetary Fund; and the United Nations,” added Dr Rowinski.
“Then there are the multi-national conglomerates, often eclipsing the powers vested in national governments. There is also a global banking system and its irrefutable role in the world’s economic downturn. To really put the puzzle together today, one has to see the interconnectivity between the hyper-local, global, economic and political.
“Students will be encouraged to get the whole picture and find that ‘global story.’ Anything else is often only half the story. I am really looking forward to engaging with students and journalists involved with this course.”
Fields in which this course could be useful are broadcasting, journalism, arts or media administration, governmental regulation of the media and lobbying of governments on behalf of the media, research, marketing, sales and advertising, design, and writing.
