Omar Alketbi and his car

Fri 2nd December, 2011

A student who has branded his car with the University of Bedfordshire’s logo has driven hundreds of people to the University’s Facebook group.

The story about Omar and his car has attracted more than 300 ‘likes’ on the University’s Facebook page.

Student Omar Alketbi has a modified Nissan 350z which he chose to brand with the University’s logo as a sign of his appreciation for his experience there. He is not being paid to promote the University.

Omar, who came to the UK from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to study a Masters in Applied Computing, said: “'The University has been incredibly supportive towards my academic and personal development and has always inspired me to achieve my best.

“I wanted to show my appreciation by helping to promote the University. I found success at the University of Bedfordshire and I want everyone to know they can too.”

The car branding includes the Twitter hash tag #seenthecar, which people have been using to tweet where they have seen the car and upload images of it.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL said: “Omar’s car is attracting a lot of attention – some people have even asked if it belongs to me! It’s fantastic that so many people are logging on to Facebook and Twitter to find out more and share where they’ve seen the car. It’s a real compliment that Omar is choosing to highlight how proud our students are to study here.”

The car branding is part of a wider regional campaign which includes an innovative online ‘storybook’ viral campaign. The campaign is based on storytelling and the University is inviting local inspiring story tellers to talk about their successes. Find out more at success.beds.ac.uk
