The mood was electric for the launch of a new student branch at the University of Bedfordshire.

The inauguration of the University’s IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student branch took place in the new Campus Centre at Luton at the end of the first term.

This will allow students the opportunity to meet and learn from fellow students, as well as faculty members and professionals in the field. Membership offers educational, technical and professional advantages through special projects, activities, meetings, tours and field trips.

IEEE student branches are established at more than 1,000 universities and colleges throughout the world, with more than a dozen in this country.

Staff and students from the Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST) were at the launch which included talks by Dr Paul Sant, the branch’s staff adviser, Dr Osei Adjei and Professor Yong Yue, Acting Head of the CST department.

Professor Yue said: “The department welcomes students being proactive and the IEEE is the world’s largest professional organisation for the advancement of technology with a large pool of resources and professionals.”

The official inauguration of the branch’s executives was performed by the special guest of honour, Andreas Koltes, who is the IEEE chair at the University of Cambridge.

New president Kesiena Chris-Iwuru (MSc Computer Security and Forensics) said: “One of the purposes is to make computing students aware and appreciate the professional vocation of IT and Engineering, as well as increasing industry experience.

“Our future plans involve holding professional career talks for students, visits to IT organisations to improve student experience, and liaising with sister organisations and branches for joint events and cross fertilisation of ideas that would bring positive benefits to the IEEE and the University at large.

“Special thanks go to Professor Yue, our staff advisers Dr Paul Sant and Tess Crosbie for their participation in the IEEE from its inception, and Edewede Oriwoh for her initiative and help in getting the IEEE running.”

Others involved on the new IEEE student branch’s executive body are Shahzad Iqbal, Jamal Miad, Abdullah Mamun, David Dunmore, Faisal Rahman and Nesbert Chinyani.
