Students and staff lent a helping hand for the first ever live broadcast from the University of Bedfordshire’s state-of-the-art media facilities.
The BBC Politics Show East was transmitted live on Sunday lunchtime from the TV studio at the Luton campus in response to the protests in the town the day before.
Presenter Etholle George was joined by Kelvin Hopkins, the MP for Luton North, and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt, who is also MP for North East Bedfordshire, in front of a specially-invited audience for the 20-minute show.
The audience comprised local council, faith and business leaders as well as some of the University’s own media students and staff.
This was the BBC Politics Show East’s second visit as a pre-election special back in May last year was recorded on the morning before broadcast.

Two current students, TV Production second years Noel Brown and Tulin Rufaioglu, acted as runners this time – and one even got behind the camera.
Tulin said: “The director approached us about doing some camera work and we flipped a coin to see who would do it, and luckily I won! I absolutely loved it and I ended up doing the most of all the cameramen there!”
Noel said: “Tulin owes me a drink! It was still great to do all the meeting and greeting and you really learn what you need to be like. It’s a bit of a shock to the system when you realise how good you have to be and how you have to be so multi skilled.”
Recent graduates Igor Drozdov and Maksim Max Popov, who both now work in the media department, liaised with the BBC production team on technical issues.
The University’s Business Development Manager Sarah Waller said: “We’re thrilled with how it went and the University is well able to cope with these major live transmissions. It’s important that the University keeps building these key relationships with major organisations such as the BBC.

“The BBC crew were incredibly generous with their time and experience to our uni students. I was very proud of our students and their professionalism.”
The Politics Show East Director Julie Hay said: “This was live and a bit more adventurous for us this time. The facilities and the people who’ve helped us are absolutely fantastic and it was really great to work with the students.
“The studio facilities are better than what we’ve got in Norwich or Cambridge. The lighting is superb and the cameras are all really easy to use.”
