Science taster day students

The University of Bedfordshire hosted a unique day to give local year nine students a taste of university life.

Some 70 students from five schools across the Eastern region were treated to a day of interactive workshops and practical study with the University’s Recruitment team. They spent time doing practical lab exercises, designed a T-shirt in mixed groups and toured the new £34m campus centre in Luton.

The day concentrated on science and was organised in conjunction with EDT, a charity that runs schemes to inspire and motivate young people to choose a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

A team of specialists from the University were on hand to answer questions from students during the day-long visit. One student said: “I thought the experience was amazing and I learnt a lot more about universities.”

Tutors from Cardinal Newman Catholic School said: “It was really good – everyone enjoyed it, especially the lab aspect.” Another student added: “The day was great and it has made me want to go to university more.”

Head of Student Recruitment Lal Joshi said: “It was great to able to work with EDT to show our local students the fantastic science facilities we have and give them the chance to see what university is really like.”

The University will have invested £140m into new state-of-the-art facilities by 2012. The University’s engineering and computing facilities have recently undergone a £1m expansion which includes two new teaching labs, a new study area for students and a new telecommunications lab at the Luton campus.

The University’s key strengths are high-quality teaching, strong employability, excellent student support, helping students beyond the curriculum and world-renowned research.
