A trio of Dance and Professional Practice students are off to Poland next week to teach at a series of dance workshops.
The three students, who are flying to Katowice from London Luton Airport next Wednesday (16 February), are funding their own trip.
International student Karolina Kotyrba is returning to her hometown of Rybnik near Katowice for the six-day trip. She is being joined by Orris Gordon and Rhianne O’Rourke, fellow second years at the Bedford campus, and all three will be staying with Karolina’s family.
They have been invited over to run a variety of dance workshops in the town’s theatre in association with the local university for a wide range of secondary and higher education students ranging from beginners to advanced dancers.
Karolina, 23, is currently living in Luton and teaches at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) in Vicarage Street. She will be involved in this year’s Luton Carnival.
Orris is a 25 year old who lives and teaches in Cambridge, while 19-year-old Rhianne is a local girl who lives and teaches in Bedford.
The students paid for their own flights with their hosts funding the workshops. It is hoped these workshops could be the catalyst for an exchange programme in the future to Poland and other countries throughout the world.
Orris said: “We’re aware that dance funding has been dramatically cut, and we have paid for things ourselves. We want to make a good impression and be able to go back and do these types of workshops again.
“We also all really want to do some sightseeing when we are out there and get the full cultural experience. You can’t miss the chance to visit somewhere of historic importance like Auschwitz.”
