A talented musician at the University of Bedfordshire could be on the verge of winning a transatlantic competition.
Phil Evans, a 28-year-old mature student from Houghton Regis, is in the second year of a degree in Music Technology at the Luton campus of the University of Bedfordshire.
He is currently topping the voting charts in an international music competition, the Robin Smith Music Award 2011 sponsored by www.WeGoLook.com, in aid of breast cancer awareness.
Phil said: “I couldn’t believe I was one of the 16 finalists as they had a ridiculous number of entries; it’s for a great cause.”
His song Something I Could Do was composed as a tribute to his mum who died of cancer when he was 12.
Phil is representing Luton and the south of England and is facing tough competition from Liverpool and Manchester in this country as well as American acts in Texas, Arkansas, Los Angeles and Detroit among others.
If successful, he will win a trip to sunny California and an opportunity to record a single at the famous Abbey Road studios, forever associated with The Beatles, as well as performing the number at a benefit concert.
Phil was also on Radio One on Christmas Day as part of the all-day Tinsel Takeover feature on the nation’s favourite radio station along with fellow Music Technology student Loudon Appleby.
The former steel erector is enjoying his studies and said: “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done; the fact that I’m a mature student doesn’t really seem to matter as there’s a balance of ages. I went back to university to learn production techniques.”
