The creation of designs for life

Graphic Design and Illustration students from the University of Bedfordshire are about to put on their creative thinking caps.

The students, from the second year of the Division of Art and Design’s Design for Communication course, are joining with other art schools and universities from across the country for a major project launched by the Design Museum in London.

They will be working on the Design Factory brief set by artist duo Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps called Creating a great moment: Communication in the Public Realm.

This is asking the students to think about how designers can communicate the ideas they feel passionately about in the public realm, and for the students to find new ways to engage with the everyday to communicate messages about the world, as a designer and as a citizen.

Design for Communication course leader Noel Douglas will be one of the judges of the competition alongside Peter and Cat.

He said: “This competition provides a unique opportunity for our students to engage with their peers in other institutions and a major cultural institution in London.

“It also fits with our course philosophy that visual communication needs to emphasise the importance of dealing imaginatively with problems in our societies and, although one of the conditions of my being a judge means I can’t supervise them, I hope they will come up with some innovative responses to such an exciting project!”
