The new Campus Centre at Luton was buzzing with noise and excitement for the climax to Chinese New Year celebrations.
Several University departments worked together for the hour-long event on Thursday (17 February) lunchtime which starred a variety of London-based professional acts.
These included spellbinding acrobats, contortionists, balancing acts and musicians, as well as a dragon dance, plate juggling in the Students’ Union and a free Chinese calligraphy workshop for staff and students.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, kicked off the proceedings by ‘waking the lion’.

The event was organised, in association with the International Office, by the Knowledge Hub and Division of Performing Arts and English collaboration which runs the University of Bedfordshire Theatre season at the Bedford campus.
Business Development Manager Sarah Waller said: “We have enjoyed collaborating with partners across the University to bring these artists to the Campus Centre. The performances took place all over our great new building and it was a truly colourful and exciting event for our colleagues and students to witness and enjoy.”
Celebrations for Chinese New Year last three weeks, in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, from the 23rd day of the last month to the 15th day of the first month.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) kicked off the celebrations with an evening of small drama sketches, songs, games and traditional instruments at the end of January.
The event was attended by the Vice Chancellor; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (External Relations), Professor Ashraf Jawaid; and the Director of the International Office, Harry Wang; along with three Ambassadors from the Chinese Embassy.
It was organised by the CSSA with help from the International Office, the Students’ Union and the Tree House chaplaincy.
