A Football Studies student at the University of Bedfordshire has landed a dream job with one of the giants of the game.
Michael Sup, in the second year of his degree at the Luton campus, has been recruited by Premiership leaders Manchester United.
Following a successful phone interview, Michael was offered a coaching role after completing an interview process at Old Trafford, which involved a theory test and a one-on-one interview, and then a 30-minute practical coaching session with local schoolchildren at United’s Carrington training complex.
After initially attending a training day in March, he is set to coach at United’s soccer camps and courses across England and potentially the globe in China, Australia, South Africa, America and Canada.
He said: “I applied for the job but it still came as a bit of a shock when the email came through telling me I’d been successful. United recruit on a yearly basis and I know hundreds and hundreds of people apply.
“I’m obviously very pleased and excited to work for a football club with such a world-famous reputation. There seems to be work all year round, although it will be predominantly in the summer for me as that’s when I’m available.
“It’s a great opportunity for me but it won’t detract from my studies or from my work with Luton.”
Michael is already the head coach of Blue Square Bet Premier Division outfit Luton Town’s under-11s in their Centre of Excellence.
Currently living in Luton but originally from King’s Lynn, he works part time with the Luton youngsters on Tuesdays, Thursdays and on Sundays.
He celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday (19 February) as his charges competed in an international tournament near Zurich in Switzerland. The team won all five group games to mark the occasion and eventually finished fifth out of 24 teams, including beating German giants Bayern Munich in one of their matches.
Michael, who has gained his UEFA B Licence certificate in coaching, previously worked full time in his gap year for the King’s Lynn Community Football scheme in Norfolk as an area manager and head of girls’ football.
He also worked in America, directing soccer camps for coaching company Play Soccer which operates across the whole of New England, in summer 2009.
