Students looking for their first teaching appointment are getting a head-start this month at the Bedford campus.
The University of Bedfordshire’s national award-winning Teaching Fair - the one and only in Bedfordshire - sees local authorities, agencies and teaching unions all recruiting for a start later in the year.
The event is taking place in the Campus Centre and Stansfeld Gym at the Bedford campus next Friday (14 January) from 9.15am-1pm.
Last year’s Teaching Fair attracted more than 500 students and was the winner of the 2010 award for Best Fair, voted for by local authority recruitment managers.
The annual vote in London - regarded as the Oscars of the teacher recruitment profession - was for the best (and worst) teacher recruitment fairs of 2009-10.
Careers advisor Christine Smith and careers events and communications co-ordinator June Wilson are again arranging this year’s event.
Christine said: “I’m aware of a number of former students who have found their first teaching post through our annual Teaching Fair.
“June and myself have worked closely with local authority recruitment managers, the academic staff and students to continually improve this event year on year.”
Students are able to receive professional advice and meet potential employers at the well-established Teaching Fair.
Guest speaker is Barry Hancock who will be there as part of his national lecture tour, First Appointments. His talk is designed to help students identify their own good practice in preparation for application and selection through to interview, first appointment and induction.
Luton Borough Council is just one of the local authorities which regularly attends the event to recruit trainee teachers.
