University students who have children, known as student parents, will be the subject of new research from the University of Bedfordshire.
Dr Marie-Pierre Moreau, a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Education Studies, is conducting research on student parents in higher education thanks to a £25,000 grant from the Nuffield Foundation.
The Nuffield Foundation is a charitable trust established in the 1940s, which works to improve social well-being by funding research and innovation in education and social policy.
Her research project consists of an investigation of the role of higher education institution (HEI) policies in supporting student parents in England.
Dr Moreau said: “It will explore what institutional support is made available to student parents in higher education; how relevant and effective are existing HEI policies and practices in supporting this group; and how relevant and effective are these policies in supporting the needs of diverse groups of student parents.”
The research draws on ten case studies of English universities, each involving an analysis of policy statements and interviews with student parents and staff. It will result in some recommendations which will be disseminated to practitioners and policymakers, so that findings can translate into practices.
Dr Moreau said: “Ultimately, the project’s ambition is to bring social and economic benefits for HEIs and student parents by increasing the retention, attainment and overall quality of life of this group.”
