Topping out Fitzroy Court

The University of Bedfordshire helped celebrate a special milestone when it took part in a Topping Out ceremony for its new £40m student halls in Luton.

The event marked the completion of the roof of Fitzroy Court in Vicarage Street which is scheduled to be ready for occupation at the start of the new academic year.

The student halls project is a partnership between the University and global student accommodation experts Campus Living Villages. Construction company Kier Marriott is building the facility.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE and Campus Living Funds Management Director Steve Burdon tightened a large bolt with a silver spanner to mark the occasion watched by Kier Marriott Managing Director John Henke.

University chaplain the Rev Andrew Goodman performed a short blessing in front of some 30 guests then John Henke presented each partner with a glass plaque.

Professor Ebdon said: “I am delighted to receive this gift on behalf of the University. Fitzroy Court is an exciting project and one which will further enhance the student experience which is at the top of all our agendas.

“I am grateful to everyone who has played their part in making this partnership work so successfully and I look forward to welcoming students to this fantastic new state- of- the-art building with ensuite facilities.”

John Henke said: “This ceremony is an opportunity to say thank you to the large numbers of people involved in this project – including the design team, architects, engineers and site workers. But our biggest thanks go to our client Campus Living Villages, and in turn their client, the University, which have had the foresight and faith to embark on this project.”

Professor Burdon added: “We couldn’t have wished for a better partner in the University. We both believe in putting the student experience at the heart of what we do. This project is the first, purpose-built halls of residence we have embarked on in the UK and I am delighted to be working in partnership with the University and, in turn, Kier Marriott, on such an exciting project.”

The halls development is part of the University’s £140m investment in its campuses. Last October it opened its new £34m Campus Centre in Luton. A new £15m postgraduate and continuing professional development centre is planned for 2013.
