There is a brighter outlook for graduates as vacancy numbers have increased for the first time since the recession began.

This is according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), which published the winter edition of its bi-annual survey yesterday (Tuesday).

The number of graduate vacancies rose by 8.9 per cent in last year’s recruitment season for the first time since the recession started to bite and this upward trend is predicted to continue with a further increase of 3.8 per cent in 2010-11.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, speaking as chair of university think-tank million+, said: “This survey confirms the importance of graduate qualifications and the risks if the Government does not fund enough places for all those wishing to study at university in 2011.

“This week’s growth figures show that the UK’s economy is faltering while unemployment is on the rise. In these circumstances a degree offers good protection and widens the opportunities of those trying to find a job.”
