Students looking for their first teaching appointment received a ‘heads-up’ on what is needed at the Bedford campus.

The University of Bedfordshire’s national award-winning Teaching Fair – the one and only such event in the county – attracted local authorities, agencies and teaching unions, all recruiting for a start later in the year.

Students were able to receive professional advice and meet potential employers on the morning of Friday, 14 January at the established event which took place in the Campus Centre and Stansfeld Gym. They were given an e-brochure which included details of all the exhibitors.

Careers advisor Christine Smith and careers events and communications co-ordinator June Wilson again ran this year’s popular event.

They said: “The feedback from last year was that the students liked the e-brochure which was used for the first time in 2010.

“We had lots of positive feedback from students and exhibitors again at this year’s event. There was a lovely atmosphere at the fair, probably the best yet.”

The guest speaker was Barry Hancock who has two decades’ experience in delivering his UK lecture tour, Preparation for First Appointments. Sponsored by NASUWT, he is expecting to speak at up to 60 universities nationwide this academic year.

His talks, to both Primary and Secondary students, attracted 450 of the young, and not so young, hopefuls studying at Bedford.

Barry said: “There are a lot more mature students here at Bedford which interests me a great deal. All the students seem to like the advice I give because it’s teacher based.

“I try to link my research with headteachers with my knowledge about how they should market themselves. I want to make sure everybody here has an equal opportunity to market themselves effectively.”
