Links between the University of Bedfordshire and a local business have led to a job for graduate Avesh Dhakal.
The 26-year-old has secured a job with a Hitchin-based IT company through the Academic into Business Computing (ABC) scheme, run b y the University.
Avesh started on a part-time project with Modern Networks in Wilbury Way, Hitchin, to gain experience in the workplace. Bosses were so impressed that they offered him a full-time role as a Developer with the expanding IT company when he graduated.
“The job is very interesting and relates to my studies. I am enjoying it and am grateful for the ABC scheme and this opportunity” said Avesh, who lives in Luton, and has an MSc in Business Information Systems.
Matthew Reeve, Managing Director of Modern Networks, has been very impressed with the calibre of students from the University.
“Avesh is a valued member of the team who was able to make a contribution from day one. We also employed Dr Helen Jacobs from the University of Bedfordshire a few years ago and she is now one of our managers with a team of her own.
“All the students we have engaged with from the University of Bedfordshire have been well-rounded individuals who have excelled academically but also fit in well with the rest of the organisation.
“What has really impressed me as an employer is that the University equips the students to work under their own initiative and make a day-one contribution to the business, which is fantastic.”
The centre for Academic into Business Computing is a dedicated unit setup to support computing students working on commercial projects as part of their degree.
The aim of these projects is to support a client’s business technical development and at the same time offers computing students an opportunity to gain valuable project and technical experience.
Avesh was put forward for the ABC scheme by Alexey Bochenkov, the University’s Business Interaction Manager.
“The student works closely with the client on a specific project with full support by academic staff. These projects equip our students with essential skills to successfully enter the workplace and provide a valuable business service,” added Alexey.
