Sixth formers get a taste of university life at Bedfordshire

1 Jul 2011 14:48:26

Around 600 sixth formers flocked to the University of Bedfordshire recently to get a taste of university life.

The Year 12 pupils were from local schools in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and included Highfield School in Letchworth and Biddenham Upper School and Wootton Upper School, both from near Bedford.

Biddenham Upper School recently visited the University’s Luton campus for a Taster Day

For each Taster Day visit the University provided a programme of practical sessions such as applying to University and the UCAS process, preparing the application and student finances. Pupils also experienced a subject taster session in computing or psychology at the University’s Luton campus.

The visits provided sixth formers and their teachers with a golden opportunity to tour the University’s world-class facilities and student accommodation, meet academics and existing students as well as ask any questions about courses and university life.

Taster Days are proving a real hit with pupils and teachers. Jordon Taylor, a sixth former from Highfield School, said “The Taster Day has been a great experience. I was unsure whether I wanted to apply to university but the campus tour has motivated me to apply later this year.”

Wootton Upper School sixth formers get to grips with the UCAS application process in the University's computer labs

Kay Everett, Assistant Head of Sixth Form at Wootton Upper School, said: “Visiting the University is a fantastic opportunity for sixth formers to focus on higher education for the day and concentrate on their options for when they leave school. Some are unsure what university has to offer them, so these visits are invaluable, and an opportunity to ask questions and then decide if university is for them.”

Nicky Kemp, Head of Sixth Form at Biddenham Upper School, added: “For most sixth formers this is their first visit to a university and the day really helps them focus on study options after sixth form.”

The University's Head of Student Recruitment Lal Joshi, said: “I am really pleased we are able to offer schools and colleges within the region an experience of university life and provide a programme to explain what it’s all about, through the campus tour and meeting with academics and current students.

“It is also important to ensure both visiting tutors and pupils are aware of the changes underway in the Higher Education sector at this early stage in the UCAS process, so that sixth formers make the best possible choices for their university careers.”

The University is hosting Open Days at its Luton and Bedford campuses on Saturday, 9 July between 9.30am-2.30pm. For more information and to register at either Luton or Bedford, call the events team on 01582 489052 or register online on the University's website
